Đại học Essex được thành lập vào năm 1964, tọa lại tại Colchester, vương quốc Anh. Essex vừa có sự sôi động và hiện đại, vừa giữ được những nét cổ điển với nhiều tòa nhà mang kiến trúc lịch sử lâu đời, những bức tường La Mã, lâu đài,… Chỉ cách trung tâm London khoảng 1. Tuy là một trường đại học trẻ nhưng trường đã có những bước tiến nhanh chóng nhờ những định hướng mới mẻ và phong cách giảng dạy đặc biệt giúp sinh viên được tận hưởng nền giáo dục hiện đại và sau khi ra trường có đầy đủ kiến thức để hoàn thành tốt công việc. Vào tháng 3/2019, Đại học Essex đã cùng với 7 trường đại học khác trên khắp châu Âu thành lập Liên minh các trường Đại học trẻ vì tương lai châu Âu (YUFE – Young Universities for the Future of Europe).

Đại học Essex bao gồm ba cơ sở – Colchester, Southend và Loughton. Cả 3 cơ sở của Essex đều được trang bị đầy đủ những cơ sở vật chất hiện đại phục vụ cho sinh viên. Mỗi cơ sở lại mang một đặc trưng riêng, như Colchester là nơi thích hợp để ăn uống với nhiều cửa hàng, quán bar,…Southend phù hợp để gặp gỡ bạn bè trong những quán cà phê, hay Loughton với những quán bar và nhà hát.
Đặc biệt, thể thao là một trong những hoạt động cực kì được yêu thích tại Essex. Tại đây có tới hơn 40 CLB thể thao sinh viên thuộc nhiều môn khác nhau như bóng đá, bóng bầu dục, bóng rổ, bóng chuyền, múa cột, hoạt náo,…Khuôn viên Colchester của Essex cũng là một trong những sân gôn đĩa lâu đời nhất tại Vương quốc Anh, là nơi đã diễn ra nhiều giải vô địch quốc tế.
